Letter of intent: The Navy has agreed to, and given a letter of intent, to provide the USS Halyburton to the OHPS-Team. However, the ship cannot be moved until the full budget has been acquired, location approved and finalized, dredging to allow the ship to enter port, a contractor (tugs) on retainer, and a Corps of Engineers study completed to ensure there are no obstacles between Philadelphia and Erie that would cause damage to the ship or cause it to run aground. All of which, must be sent to the Navy, before Phase 4 (ship’s movement) is approved and the title of the ship given to the OHPS-Team. The contractor awarded the contract to move the ship is McAllister Towing of Virginia, Inc.
Functionality: The ship is said to be in great condition overall, but in need of a paint job. The Port Authority in Philadelphia declined allowing the ship to be painted there so it will have to wait until it arrives in Erie, where she will receive a through cleaning, new paint and some custom lighting in any area where you would see boards lit if she were underway (bridge, CIC, etc.).
Schedule of events:
Phase-4 (full approval and title given to the OHPS-Team): Once they are in Phase-4 we have arranged for a Zoom call with the Team, to announce it to our crews first! We will know 3 weeks before the media or anyone else in Erie. We requested this to enable our crews to make reservations for hotels, etc. giving us first shot to book in Erie, before anyone else knows.
Upon Arrival: There is already a plan by the OHPS-Team to have a “Friends & Family” event for the night of the ship’s arrival that will be exclusive to our crews, as well as the friends and family of all involved. After that she will be up in the yards getting prepped for the grand opening.
Zoom Call updates: In August (Date/Time - TBD) there will be an interactive Zoom call with Mr. Pfadt and Ms. Brewer from the OHPS-Team to give us a live update and answer any questions the crews may have about the ship, the location, the plans, etc. To ensure as many questions as possible can be answered there will be a limit of 100 participants on the Zoom call and it will be handled with a signup sheet and a first come first serve process. For security reasons we will be posting the signup sheet on this website and not on Facebook. Once posted, you will find the date and time of the Zoom Call and will need to sign up, providing your email address so a link can be sent to you to give you access to the call. You will receive a confirmation email shortly after signing up and the link will be emailed a few days before the event.
